Ask AI for a gentle stretching routine after weeks on the couch

The writer of a Senior Tech Cafe post, a 65-year-old man, broke his ankle and spent six weeks barely leaving the couch. His muscles got so tight that standing up was a struggle, so he asked ChatGPT for a stretching routine and schedule. Four months later he was still doing it and felt looser, and he had added an at-home strength plan from ChatGPT too.

What they did

His ankle healed without surgery and he was walking fine, but six weeks of inactivity left him stiff and unmotivated. He gave ChatGPT a short prompt: his age, that his joints and muscles were very tight, and that he wanted a stretching routine and schedule. It suggested stretching three to four times a week for 15 to 20 minutes, with six stretches (neck, shoulders, chest, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves), how to do each one, a cool-down, and a reminder to stop and see a health professional if anything hurt. When he asked why only three or four times a week, it said to ease in so the routine becomes a habit.

How it went

"But it's a good start," he wrote of the plan, admitting it wasn't perfect. He had followed it for four months, felt looser and more flexible, and said he hadn't missed a day. He liked it enough to ask ChatGPT for a strength routine he could do at home, which he had been doing for three months. His advice is to be specific about your age, your goal, and any limits, and to check with your doctor before starting.

Worth knowing

This is for general stiffness, not for treating an injury. Before starting any new exercise, especially after a fracture, surgery, a fall, or with heart, joint, or balance problems, ask your doctor or a physical therapist whether the stretches are right for you. Never push a stretch into pain, and stop if anything hurts. You don't need to give the AI your name or medical records; a general description is enough.

Try it yourself

Copy this into ChatGPT (or any AI assistant). Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.

I'm in my [60s / 70s / 80s] and my muscles and joints feel stiff after [a few weeks of being less active / sitting a lot]. My doctor has said [it's OK to exercise / I should avoid ...]. I'd like a gentle beginner stretching routine I can do at home in about 15 minutes, with a simple weekly schedule. Include seated versions of each stretch, explain how to do each one safely, and tell me which signs mean I should stop. Then list three questions I should ask my doctor or a physical therapist before I start.
