Ask AI how a hobby you love could help someone nearby

In his Retire & RISE newsletter, Bob Caine shared what three readers got when they tried his two-minute ChatGPT prompt: Mary, 70, a gardener; Sam, 66, who does small repairs around the house; and Susan, 68, who reads and knits. Each asked how something they already enjoy could help another person.

What they did

Mary asked ChatGPT how she could use her love of gardening to help someone else without spending money or starting a business. Sam and Susan asked the same kind of question about home repairs and about reading and knitting, then sent their results back to the newsletter.

How it went

The ideas were small and free. Mary's included sharing extra produce with a neighbor, teaching someone one simple gardening skill, and bringing a small bundle of flowers to brighten someone's home. Sam's included helping a neighbor with a fix they'd been putting off, and Susan's included reading aloud to someone who'd enjoy the company and turning leftover yarn into small comfort gifts. Caine's takeaway was that none of it needed "a business plan," a website, or any money.

Worth knowing

The AI only knows what you tell it, so mention your limits up front, like time, energy, getting around, or budget. Before you offer help, ask the person what they'd actually welcome, and check before dropping off food or flowers in case of allergies. You don't need to share anyone's name or address to get ideas.

Try it yourself

Copy this into ChatGPT (or any AI assistant). Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.

I'm [age range, e.g., in my late 60s] and I enjoy [hobby or skill]. Suggest [5] simple ways I could use it to help someone else, like a neighbor, a friend, or a grandchild, without spending money or starting a business. I have about [time] a week, and [any limits, e.g., I don't drive at night / can't lift heavy things]. Keep each idea to one or two sentences, and include one friendly way to offer it that won't feel pushy.
