Ask AI whether a mechanic's repair quote makes sense before you say yes

Barbara, 71, a former educator who spoke to Mashable, asked ChatGPT about $800 worth of car repairs her mechanic had proposed. It told her that replacing her Honda CR-V's transmission and brake fluid sounded reasonable, but that some items, including a high-pressure transmission flush, were worth skipping.

Tool used: ChatGPTAdded Oct 18, 2026

What they did

She typed in the work her mechanic recommended and asked whether it made sense. She uses ChatGPT the same way for other practical questions and product comparisons, like an Ireland trip itinerary with friends and finding a match for a discontinued drugstore perfume she loved.

How it went

She came away knowing which parts of the quote looked routine and which to question. She keeps her chats businesslike and tries not to share much about herself: "I try to just keep it very effective," she told Mashable.

Worth knowing

AI can't see your car, and it may not know your model's maintenance schedule. Check its answer against your owner's manual, and ask the shop to explain any item you're unsure about, or get a second quote. Leave out your VIN, license plate, address, and payment details. If something affects brakes, steering, or safety, talk it through with a mechanic you trust before you skip it.

Try it yourself

Copy this into ChatGPT (or any AI assistant). Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.

My mechanic recommended this work on my car. Make, model, and year: [car]. Mileage: about [miles]. Recommended work: [list each item and its price]. For each item, explain in plain English what it is, whether it's commonly due at this mileage, and whether it seems routine, worth questioning, or something people often skip. Tell me which items affect safety. Give me three polite questions to ask the shop. Remind me to check my owner's manual. I've left out my VIN, plate number, and personal details.
