Plan a group day outing that's easy on everyone, then walk it first

Tsugunori Katayama, a retired company executive in Japan born in 1953 who teaches smartphone and AI skills to older adults, plans walking outings for a local seniors' group. For a museum day with about 20 people, some using canes, he gave ChatGPT the meeting time, the route rules, the lunch break, and the end time, and got a full timetable and a sign-up flyer in a fraction of his usual prep time.

Tool used: ChatGPTAdded Oct 23, 2026

What they did

The outing was to two museums in the Ryogoku area of Tokyo. He told ChatGPT the details: meet at a set station at 9:50 and leave at 10:00, take a subway line that needs no transfer (members ride on a senior pass), about 20 people with some using canes, a 45-minute lunch at the museum, and break up at 3:00 p.m. He also asked it to look up admission fees. Then he had it write a flyer for recruiting members, with large type and only the key facts: meeting time, end time, and costs.

How it went

ChatGPT laid out the day minute by minute, with toilet breaks built in. It also pointed out that the no-transfer route took a little longer but was worth it for the people with canes. The flyer came out ready to use. Planning that used to take a long time now took a fraction of it. His warning: don't use the schedule as is. Walk the route yourself first to check for elevators instead of stairs, places to rest, and toilets, and remember that 20 people move more slowly than the plan assumes. His post is in Japanese.

Worth knowing

AI can get opening hours, fees, closures, and travel times wrong or out of date, so check each place's official website or call ahead, and confirm train or bus times with the transit company. Do a test walk of the route if you can, and ask the museums about elevators, wheelchairs, and group rates. Don't put members' names, phone numbers, or health details into the chat.

Try it yourself

Copy this into ChatGPT (or any AI assistant). Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.

I'm planning a day outing for a group of about [number] older adults. Some walk slowly or use [canes / walkers / wheelchairs]. Details: meet at [place] at [time], travel by [train / bus / car] with as few transfers and stairs as possible, visit [places], lunch at [place] for about [minutes], and finish at [place] by [time]. Please: 1) Make a relaxed timetable with toilet stops, rest breaks, and extra time for moving as a group. 2) Point out anything on the route that could be hard for people who walk slowly. 3) List what I should check with each place and the transit company before the day. 4) Write a short, large-print sign-up flyer with only the meeting time, end time, and costs.
