Turn a messy PDF list into a sortable spreadsheet

AARP reports that Lisa Ezrol Curran, 58, needed a searchable directory and used ChatGPT to rebuild one from a messy, poorly formatted PDF. Her first tries came back tangled until she gave very specific instructions.

Tool used: ChatGPTAdded Oct 13, 2026

What they did

She learned to tell it to use only the information in the file, which column headers to use, and to leave a blank where something like an email address was missing.

How it went

She checked the results carefully and made only a few small edits to the 75-page file. She compared it to working with an intern.

Worth knowing

Spot-check rows against the original, since AI can drop or shuffle entries. Don't upload files with Social Security, bank, or medical ID numbers. This works well for club rosters, church directories, and contact lists.

Try it yourself

Copy this into ChatGPT (or any AI assistant). Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.

I'm attaching a PDF of [what it is, e.g., our club's member directory]. It contains no ID or account numbers. Turn it into a spreadsheet with exactly these columns: [Name, Phone, Email, Address, etc.]. Use only information that's in the file. If something is missing, leave the cell blank; don't guess. When you're done, tell me how many entries you found so I can compare it to the original.
