Photograph a medicine leaflet and ask AI to explain it in plain words
A Japanese blogger who writes as 酔いどれ (yoidoreo) about bringing AI into life for him and his wife, a couple in their 70s, realized that after five months he didn't really know what his wife's nightly osteoporosis injection did. He photographed the folded-up information sheet that came with it and asked ChatGPT to explain it simply. His wife ended up reading the answer herself and planned to ask her doctor more at her next visit.
What they did
The leaflets that come with prescriptions kept piling up, folded, in a drawer, full of tiny print and technical words meant for medical professionals. He took a photo of the sheet for his wife's medicine and asked ChatGPT to explain it so a middle-schooler could understand, covering three things: what the medicine is for, how it differs from other osteoporosis medicines, and what to watch for when injecting it.
How it went
The answer surprised him. He learned that many osteoporosis medicines work by slowing bone loss, while hers works by helping build new bone, and that it can only be used for a limited time before switching to something else. When he went to show his wife, she stopped him and started reading ChatGPT's explanation herself, asking what "building bone" meant. She said she'd ask her doctor for more detail at her next appointment. His point: you don't have to struggle through a leaflet written for professionals; a photo and one plain request can get you started.
Worth knowing
Use the explanation to understand your medicine and to prepare questions, not to make decisions. Never start, stop, skip, or change a dose because of what a chatbot says; check with your pharmacist or doctor, who know your full history. AI can misread a blurry photo or get details wrong, so compare anything important with the leaflet itself. Before taking the photo, cover or crop out your name, the pharmacy label, and any prescription or member numbers.
Try it yourself
Copy this into ChatGPT (or any AI assistant). Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details.
I'm attaching a photo of the information sheet that came with a prescription medicine. I've covered my name and other personal details. Please explain it in plain, simple words: 1) What is this medicine for, and how does it work? 2) How is it different from other common medicines for the same condition? 3) What should I pay attention to when taking it (timing, food or drinks to avoid, side effects to report)? 4) List anything you couldn't read clearly. 5) Give me three questions to ask my pharmacist or doctor. Please don't tell me whether to change how I take it.
